You mention things were different for the Romans because of the treatment they received from their barbarian captors but only 6,000 of the 91,000 Germans captured at Stalingrad managed to make it back to Germany and only after serving a lot of hard time in the gulags. Doesn't sound like things were any better for the Germans than the Romans. Whose to say what they would do, but I have always been of the mind that as a regular soldier, if I knew what the Russians or Japanese had in store for me I would have gone out but not by my hand and not alone. But I suppose that's easy for me to say since I wasn't there facing that choice. Paulus got off easier than his men. Not that I have a lot of compassion for Nazi soldiers, but I'm sure a fair amount of draftees were wondering what the f*ck as they were freezing their asses off in Russia. Hitler sure was a f-head.
