  1. The miraculous deliverances Dr. Sowell speaks of are examples of Divine Intervention. Time and again Washington was able to slip away. When the British put the torch to the nascent capital known as Washington City, a hurricane suddenly appeared, the likes of which no one had seen before, dousing the fires and killing British soldiers as tornados popped up and ran through their camps. But God has also let the nation know when He was displeased. As President Lincoln put it in his Second Inaugural Address : "The Almighty has His own purposes. Woe unto the world because of offenses for it must needs be that offenses come but woe to that man by whom the offense cometh...Yet, if God wills that it continue until all the wealth piled by the bondsman's two hundred and fifty years of unrequited toil shall be sunk and until every drop of blood drawn with the lash shall be paid by another drawn with the sword as was said three thousand years ago so still it must be said 'the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether." The thing is, when you tell God you don't need Him, that you've got this, He always responds: "Your will be done." If graffiti was a thing in Rome in 27 B.C., you may have seen some kind of warning for us akin to the lines of Douglas MacArthur: "Old republics never die, they just fade away."
