I have always said if you want to understand the left, especially it's authoritarian tendencies, Godless belief system, emotional appeal, and use of violence to get what they want you have to go start at the source which is the French Revolution. This is especially true if you want to understand Marxism. Marx's philosophy is a bastard child of the French Revolution and the thought leaders who inspired it like Rousseau and Voltaire. Thomas Jefferson was a big fan of the French Revolution and dismissed thousands of people getting their heads chopped off and churches being plundered as just a case of an oppressed group letting off a bit of steam. It's a good thing he didn't have more sway with Washington when he was secretary of state. Who knows how things might have went if he had gotten his way and plunged the new nation into a second war against Britain in support of the demonic French Jacobins. In the end the got what they deserved, Napoleon. Tyrants always rise out of left wing revolutions. Always.
