  1. I don't know if a single Caesar-like leader will consolidate power in the west. The west has been adopting a more collective; "we are the world" ethos for more than a century. It would be much harder for a Hitler-type to threaten the west because of the alliances set up in the 1940s to prevent such an occurrence. No, if anything a modern triumvirate-like body will assume control once the U.S. finally crashes and burns. The dictators don't do the killing, bureaucrats handle that. When people care more about their pension than their neighbor you end up with trains and camps. Our would-be authoritarians have learned from mistakes made by ideologues who advocated centralized command and control on to narrow a scale and they learned from the mistakes of the revolutionaries who wanted the world and wanted it now. Tyranny is like a glacier, not a super-nova. It moves slowly but it always moves forward and never cedes ground. It doesn't explode and leave disorder in its wake. One day you wake up and there you are, the frog in the pot so-to-speak. But hey, you'll still have Netflix and the playoffs to keep you entertained. Rome never abandoned the bread and circus mindset, even when the Visigoths were at the gates. Comfort, that will be our downfall, and they won't have to fire a shot.
