I think a heroic life is one rooted in virtue and justice, not self-actualization. It's true that people who are unsure of themselves are least likely to act heroically but sometimes there is an internal flame that just needs the proper catalyst to ignite it. And I disagree with the notion of hero-worship. Hero-worship is a practice that will always leave you disillusioned and disappointed because people are flawed beings. Hero-admiration perhaps. Worship needs to be reserved to the one true God who will never leave you disillusioned or disappointed. Don't confuse that assertion with a guarantee that God will cure all your Earthly troubles. Bad things still happen because evil exists. But isn't that what heroes are all about? Combatting that evil by acting virtuously and being just? Heroes gain that status because we assign it to them. There are many heroes whose names remain obscure. But I agree with the premise, we need more people willing to perform acts of heroism.
