I wouldn't say Hitler won the trust of the military high command after whacking Rohm and defanging the SA. It was more transactional, a mutual agreement based on pragmatism. Both sides needed the support of the other at that point in time. As for telling Hitler what he wanted to hear, I'm sure each had his own reasons but you can chalk it up to what's best for me.
