  1. The 8th Air Force suffered more fatalities than the the entire Marine Corps (26,000 +) The only group with a higher kill percentage were the submariners. Yeah, the air war cost a lot in men lost and money spent, but without air supremacy the Allies don't make it to Germany in 1945. Hats off to Jimmy Doolittle who changed the primary mission of fighter aircraft from bomber escort to wiping out the Luftwaffe. War is a dirty business and these days while it's settled on the ground, it's won in the air. See Desert Storm or the Six Day War if you don't take my word for it.
