The Army Air Force had the highest casualty rate of any branch during WWII and The 8th Air Force lost more men than the Marine Corps. Hap Arnold wasn't mentioned much in this talk but he was one of the greatest generals the US has ever produced. I was fortunate enough to meet several aircrew members from WWII during my time in the USAF and the stories they told were quite captivating. My friend's dad for instance eluded the Nazi's for more than a month in Yugoslavia after being shot down and was able to make it back to Britain. I never knew that until he shared it with me after I joined the service. It's like I used to tell the young troops I worked with, once you are a member of the fraternity other Vets will open up to you in ways they often won't with other's, including their family members. Their numbers are dwindling so if you are ever blessed to have an opportunity to speak with a WWII Vet take advantage of it. Some stories will break your heart but they will all provide inspiration. One of my proudest accomplishments while I served was working with a variety of groups to raise funds for the WWII Memorial. I finally got to see it when I lived near DC and it is impressive. I encourage everyone to take your kids and grandkids to the DC memorial and The Arizona Memorial and let them experience a bit of the greatest generation. And if you haven't already, you should read Dr. Hanson's book on The Second World Wars. It's a bit wonky at points bit it is very well researched and expertly presented. A smart guy that's for sure.
