  1. I'm not that into comparing one society with another, especially over vast distances of time. But if you want to draw a parallel, I think we have more in common with the Austro-Hungarian Empire than the Roman Republic. The Hapsburgs ended up with an empire chock-full of different ethnic groups with different cultures and different religions and nobody was glad to be a part of it at the end. They also had a bloated bureaucracy ran by a bunch of old guys, guys who hadn't fought in a real war. Sound familiar? We're rotting from the inside because the melting pot no longer exists. People aren't coming to the U.S. to become Americans. They are brining their culture with them and nobody has any interest in assimilating with anyone. The widening gap between people on opposite sides of the political spectrum acts as a force multiplier. America succeeded because even though people came from different cultures they wanted to belong to something new, they wanted to be Americans. Now even people whose ancestry goes back generations don't want to be Americans. The old poster with John Wayne asking: "Remind me again why I have to dial one for English" has become more of a prophetic warning than a light-hearted laugh. This post is coming from an immigrant who wanted to be a citizen more than anything else when he was a little kid, someone who defended this nation for most of his adult life so yeah, I know a bit about what I'm talking about. The Balkanized America people like Pat Buchanan warned us about is coming upon us, and I fear it's too late to stop. Our virtue won't save us because along with being polarized we have become largely Goddess, on both sides of the political divide. Conservatism is dying because there isn't much left to conserve. If I sound cynical, well, as George Carlin said, inside every cynic beats the broken heart of an idealist. Wanna fix things? Start with getting right with God, because until we repair that relationship, everything else is moot.
