Live and ground, not live and neutral as that would be equivalent to plugging in a light bulb or any other small load. I've never seen a GFCI without a test button, for places where it's mandatory that typically includes testing every X years. But hey i'm sure Japan make flawless GFCI's which never ever malfunction or fail. I guess Japan also doesn't have lightning strikes either, or they are okay with humans becoming lightning rods. Not my definition of "safer" but each to their own.

 @TimothyEBaldwin live and neutral are the wires used by loads. A light bulb is indistinguishable from a resistor in terms of the GFCI. You create a ground leakage fault by leaking current from the live wire to ground wire. Did you even watch the video or understand what an AC sign wave is? What is under the little flap on the recipticle shown near the very end and why? đ¤¨

@TimothyEBaldwin ah yep, i understand what you're saying now - ie the resistor will be bypassing one side of the protected circuit, not simply from live to neutral and in that case you're correct.
