It's a true statement. A psychologist may have studied for many years but they don't have a medical degree nor can they prescribe or even recommend medication. They literally are merely someone you can talk to. Name one thing beyond talking which they can do for a patient? Not all Phd's are equal and the vast majority of Psychology graduates fail to find employment in the field, let alone one with direct one-on-one patients. It is what it is.

@ToyokaX who said drugs were? Ask a psychologist what the basal ganglia is and most of them will have no clue off the top of their head. Psychologists have a purpose and place in the world, especially as seeing a psychiatrist would be overkill for mamy minor issues, but medical professionals they are not. All a psychologist can do is talk to you, for anything else you'll be referred to a psychiatrist or GP, it is what it is.

@corbeaudejugement a Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D or D.Psych) is not a medical degree nor does it make someone a medical doctor (MD). You should be ashamed of even implying such nonsense.

It's a true statement. A psychologist may have spent years at university getting a degree, but they are still merely a person you can talk to. They have absolutely no medical training or certification. There's a reason psychology majors are the butt of many jokes in acadamia. It's ironic how sensitive Psychology graduates and students are about this.. you'd think they would have better control of their emotions 😉

@corbeaudejugement when you said "except a psychology degree is a medical degree" No, it is not. An enrolled nurse has more medical training and certification than a Psychology graduate with a masters degree.

@Ellman1231 @Ellman1231 no not at all, to be clear psychology is very much a respected field and not pseudo-science. Personally when i think of psychology, the arm involving therapy is not at the forefront, it would be things like psychometric tests, marketing techniques, coaching etc - basically all the business related aspects. Secondary to this would then be the academic or theory side - things like the Trolley Problem, Stanford Prison Experiment etc. It's a wide field and talk therapy is only a small piece of the pie, much like medical isn't just doctors and drugs. It's ironic how often people with a psychology degree are the ones who react childishly and have behavioural issues. Just look at this thread, it's not hard to spot them... "I stopped listening" - i can't help but picture a child with there fingers in their ear going lalalalal i can't hear you 🤣

@corbeaudejugement i said you should be ashamed, for your own sake. Attempting to correct someone with a technicality whilst simultaneously getting it technically wrong and then trying to back pedal is a fairly embarrassing thing to do. So much so it was worth pointing out and having a chuckle. If that's your definition of "throwing a fit" you must not get out very much. Better luck next time champ.

@Ellman1231 where did i say "just taking" exactly?

@KyleOFlynn a "degree" is also a measurement of temperature. Context and wording matter, psychology is not a medical degree.

@KyleOFlynn Psychology is a social science. You should be even more ashamed of yourself than that other guy above.

@WhalesArePeopleToo in Australia, a Psychiatrist can have you involuntarily committed to a psych ward - because they have the necessary medical training to be qualified medical practitioners that are legally permitted and in certain situations required to do so. A Psychologist does not. If an ambulance has just picked up a manic patient you know who that patient is going to be taken to for assessment? A psychiatrist in a hospital. Where are they definitely not going to be taken? To a psychologist in an office building. There is far more to it than just prescribing medication. It's truly worrying so many people are attempting to speak on a subject matter they clearly know very little about and conflating psychologists as being even remotely close to medical specialists is absurd. No one with a psychology degree would be making these claims as they are well aware they do not have a medical qualification.
