@judgemental9253 at a previous large telecommunications company we used Cisco BBA's (broadband aggregators - devices which tens of thousands of customers internet connections are terminated on) We had two fail simultaneously in an usual way that had everyone, including Cisco's top engineers, scratching their heads. The two devices were independent of each other so it wasn't some weird fail-over related crash and config hadn't changed for months. These aren't cheap devices nor the money we paid for ongoing support, we're talking millions of dollars so whilst a simple power cycle got them going again our execs wanted answers - a shrug your shoulders "must have just been a glitch" wasn't going to cut it. So much so the devices were shipped to Cisco for thorough analysis in their r&d lab and weeks later do you want to know what their final conclusion was for the failure? Solar flares! I kid you not, it's a real thing. Something about the radiation affecting the chips causing a malfunction and it was the only plausible explanation the lab could deduce. We changed to redback BNG's when it came time to upgrade/refresh the devices once the contract was up. I'm sure somewhere on the interwebs there is a better explanation and verification i'm not making this up... but point is, it wouldn't surprise me if solar flares gets blamed for round 3 as it's a real thing that can affect high performance mission critical stuff 🤣
