I have a job that is often helping people advocate for some cause or goal they are very very passionate about. Often they are extremely uncompromising in the way they want to talk about it. I have found it as helpful to ask a question. Do you want to have a cathartic rant, or do you want to change someone's mind? And I think the truth is often that they actually want to have a cathartic rant but most people will say the second. It's an effective question because it causes the arc of the conversation to change. People will often talk about the extreme importance of whatever their deal is. And I will tell them if it is that important isn't it important enough to talk about persuasively?
