  1. Because most of the innovation and infrastructure the world is built on and with over the last 150 years occurred in imperial units. Scrapping that would cost trillions of dollars in retooling, conversion of documentation, regulations, etc. not saying it shouldn't happen gradually but there is a huge cost.
