I don't think requiring an NDA is sketchy. That's necessary for normal product development. I think the issue is what the content of the NDA is and whether they are willing to negotiate it . I do business law . Not to drop this just for bragging or something I'm just saying this is a normal part of my business . Anybody who is developing a new product especially if it's patentable would be exercising malpractice if they didn't have a nondisclosure agreement. However if an investor or somebody had some real concerns, it's not that big a deal to make a nondisclosure agreement that permits them to talk about whether it worked but not how it worked . these are also necessary for hiring most the time in order for somebody to make an intelligent decision about whether they want to join your company as an employee if they have expertise they want to know whether your product works or has the likelihood because that's job security for them. Most of them are not going to sign an NDA that prohibits them from working for a competitor before they know what your product is . But they might sign one that says they won't use your ideas elsewhere . overkill NdA's pretty normal and I wouldn't say that they mean that the person is dishonest so much as they don't know how to protect himself well and they're just motivated by fear of losing their work . It's when somebody isn't willing to make reasonable concessions and adjustments that you should be concerned .
