Pretty long actually. The 9 para loaded for the old Lugers was fairly spicy. 9 nato which would be on the hot side of 9mm +P by saami spec is basically the same load.

I've shot one too, and I wouldn't put any of those superlatives on it. It's very good for its day, which means its unremarkable by modern standards. Like Jay Leno talking about a Duesenberg for being amazing in that it can handle California freeway traffic about as well as a 1998 Camry.

@soapmaker2263 The history of it is pretty interesting. It's a little bit like horse butts to railroad gauge equals modern cars and the size of the rocket nozzles on the shuttle. 9mm Luger was an automatic cartridge designed to replicate the 36 cal Colt Navy. If you've seen ballistic testing of the black powder revolvers with a full load, it's almost identical in performance to 9mm Nato ball in ballistic gel. More or less the same diameter at the same energy level. Luger was adapting the Borshart pistol to an improved version, with the german navy as the first serious anticipated customer. (Oversimplified history, but more or less). So it's got a navy client, and it is an automatic replacement for the Navy caliber. Based on the 30 mauser cartridge IIRC.
