  1. That's beech wood. It is common on a lot of Nort or Eastern Europe guns. Bulgarian AK furniture for example uses some beech.

  2. Most people don't reasonably expect to train for "All rifles". They train to use their own guns. It is reasonable to be able to be proficient with a few different styles without difficulty too. I find the rationale you stated frustrating, because it means one should never improve anything. Every rifle should have the same clumsy charging handle and bolt hold open as the AR15, and every pistol should have a single sided browning style mag release rather than the clever euro trigger guard mag release. No innovation allowed, because it might take you a fraction of a second to learn the difference if you borrow (or scavenge) a gun later for some reason.
