There's a very good book called Jonathan strange and Mr Norrel, by Susanna Clarke. It is I guess you could say historical fantasy set during the regency period. and it's exceptionally well written and that it matches the tone of other things written at the time without inserting the ideas and values of the modern person into that era. The main text the book is very dry, and assumes that the reader was aware of most of the circumstances as they would be common knowledge. Most of the story and tone is actually advanced through the big footnotes. It's very artful. I feel like Toljein maybe you wanted to do that but didn't quite pull it off. Clarke perfected it. And then she wrote a related book set in the same world so to speak written as a modern literary anthology with each chapter being completely totally different and feeling completely like it was written by a different author. I can't think of any other author who could pull that off, and have it still be something that is interesting and enjoyable to read.
