Props for showing a bunch of gun nerds that you have a harbor freight flashlight. ~"Don't you know that you need to have a $150 100,000,000 lumen light in your pocket? Your life may depend on it! Don't you love your family? Spend more money- REEEEEEEE!"

It was broke. The original AR charging handle was a trigger shaped spur on the top. It got too hot to touch, so the rear charging handle solved that problem. Ian has covered that. Too hot to touch is a bigger deal than the occasional "need" for a forward assist. I don't love the rear charging handle, but these are just the facts of the case.

Gun guys always demand a more expensive version of everything. It works. He hasn't died. Nicer things are nicer, but that doesn't make them necessary.

They need to lock open, and they tend to be run more like a pistol, from olden timey thinking. i.e. more like modern gun handling: Right handstays in firing position, left hand does everything else. So usually the charging handle is designed to work left handed with gross motor skills, and be very cheap and simple to make. SMGs were very frequently made as a cheap and simple gun to make a lot of in an emergency. A big crude knob in a slot with a notch in it covers that need pretty well.
