  2. islands aren't meaningless... they extend the nations economic zone. whoever owns those little islands also owns the rights to everything for hundreds of miles around them. likewise whoever controls hans island controls that stright which is likely to become a huge shipping lane in the coming decades... so ya, it got important, that's why they settled it... not to mention russia is always eyeing the northern seas.
