  5. there are already cheaper and easier mechanical energy storage solutions... why would anyone even consider a bunch of cranes with so many points of failure as opposed to something simple like pumping water up a hill? even something like a giant flywheel is simpler and probably better. the most complicated solution is never the best one. edit: well you said that. one thing I never hear mentioned though is potential energy loss through evaporation of the water, but that's probably not a lot.

I'm still convinced that scientific progress depends on us fully figuring out the effects of radiation and being able to treat it's damage. if radiation wasn't an issue we could make use of a much wider range of technology and make things like space travel less complicated without the need for heavy shielding.
