  2. there are already cheaper and easier mechanical energy storage solutions... why would anyone even consider a bunch of cranes with so many points of failure as opposed to something simple like pumping water up a hill? even something like a giant flywheel is simpler and probably better. the most complicated solution is never the best one. edit: well you said that. one thing I never hear mentioned though is potential energy loss through evaporation of the water, but that's probably not a lot.
