Of course Ukraine should have defended itself, but I think this war could have been avoided all together. With help of the EU, US and Nato their former democratically elected prime minister Yanukovuch was kicked out, also with help of neo-nazi's. In the west we aren't that picky who we use to get what we want, whether it is Al Quaida, Taliban or whatever extremist group can do our dirty business.
The EU made sure Ukraine would choose to go west, instead they should have helped Ukraine be a bridge between the east and west, between Russia and Europe. It was possible, but they just wanted Ukraine on their side, just as Russia wanting them to be east oriented. The EU saw big potential in Ukraine, because of the cheap farm land, natural resources and cheap labour. And beside that Ukraine had/has much looser enviornmental laws and much less strict laws for labour (safety), which cost big companies in the west a lot of money.
That is why the west wanted and still wants Ukraine, not because Russia attacked it. They never helped Moldova or Georgia against the Russian, because there was nothing in it for the west, nothing to earn!
Now the west is paying billions to Ukraine, but it is no charity. No no it is an investment(loans)! Zelensky had to sign contracts, which grants US companies, like BlackRock and JP Morgan amongst others to rebuild the country after the war. Not Ukrainian companies, no western countries will rebuild Ukraine. These same companies owm the weapon manufacturers, so they win no matter what.
They have also demanded the privatisation of all state-owned enterprises such as infrastructure, public transport, etc, etc. And of course these same companies will buy them up. But Ukraine can never repay the loans, so it is also possible that they will then demand the state-owned enterprises as repayment of the loan.
Now because of the war, prices for land has gone down a lot and who buys it up, whilst a war is raging? Yes of course the same companies.
Ukraine is a cashcow first class, that is why the west fights for it. They pull the same trick out of their hat as in Iraq, bomb the land and infrastructure and then your puppet politician you put in place will grant you the contracts to buy their companies, land and to rebuild what you helped to destroy.
I weep for Ukraine, the Russians destroyed so much, but their so called allies and friends are skimming their money under the guise of fighting for you and helping you. It is a rotten world we live in!

@7JeTeL7 Neo-nazi's did definately help with the protests and violence, that is just facts. Marshall plan is different and helped a lot, but we did not have to hand over our assets and lands or even change our laws, like Ukraine does. JP Morgan and BlackRock also demanded the unions had to lose much of their control. Who are they to demand these things? And look up how much land Monsanto and others are buying up in Ukraine whilst a war is raging. How ethical is that? They never would have helped Ukraine if there was something in it for them, as simple as that. Does that matter? It depends, how much they demand of the party they help. What now happens is wrong how much they take and buy.
I don't get wars at all or power hungry people, who need empires to boost their egos. Whether is were the Romans, Napoleon, Nazi's, USSR, Putin. I value my own freedom and other people's freedom too. But we were naive to think wars were a thing of the past. Here in the Netherlands we wrecked our army, because we thought (well I did not) eternal peace had arrived. But humans will always strive for power, sadly. I wish it was different, but humans can be jerks.
I never said Yankovych was a good guy, but he was democratically elected and the west supported his downfall. Who are we to meddle into other countries? In the west we always think we are the good guys, but after Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and other nations, I woke up from my dream. About 6 million deaths in these wars. It made other nations think, welll if you guys can do it, so can we.
It is true what Putin did to stop Georgia and Moldova becoming Nato or EU members, but now they want Ukraine to join anyway, so that rule doesn't say much anymore.
But what if your house is on fire and I say I help you fight the fire, but I demand your car, your garage, etc. Woukd you say that is ethical? Of course you can pay for the cost as much as you can, Ukraine can pay too to some extend, but if they then plunder the country it is a whole different story.
