  1. the problem was never vertical progression, it was blizzard inability to balance vertical progression. they simply ballooned the numbers out of control because players whined when they couldnt feel more powerful. rather than tempering player expectation they just added ridiculous stat gains on gear to bow to player demand. also, there is no true horizontal progression, it will always increase vertically. numbers will always go up. so unless you plan on all gear post Naxx to be transmog only, the stat increase will inevitably invalidate all previous content. only way to combat that is to add in an option to nerf you down to the contents level via a drop down menu similar to timewalking.
