  2. We translate X into KH because it sounds like a lot more like "K" than "H". Our "K" sound is a sharp out breath using the tongue to stop and release the air. Russian uses an open sound with the breath continuing through but restricted by the tongue, which makes it sound like a guttural "K". We don't hear any sounds in Russian that sound like an "H". Ukrainians say "H" where Russians would say "G", and that makes it obvious which language it is.
