Did DJT consult Alaskans on this name change? I somehow doubt it. I think Denali is the only correct name for the mountain, as it has been so named by the Athabaskans for many centuries.

@Rashnak66 - the official federal name. The official state of Alaska name has been Denali since 1975.

@anthonyplatt1678 - it is entirely within Alaskas borders too. What would Alaskans have called it?

Denali is a more respectful name to the Native Americans who named the mountain in the first place. McKinley, on the other hand, had never been to Alaska and never saw this mountain, so there is no basis in naming it after him.

@brucefromaz7708 - From Wikipedia’s article on Denali: The Alaska Board of Geographic Names changed the state name of the mountain to Denali in 1975, which was how it was referred to locally. However, a request in 1975 from the Alaska state legislature to the United States Board on Geographic Names to do the same at the federal level was blocked by Ohio congressman Ralph Regula, whose district included McKinley's home town of Canton.

@ - It depends on how much native languages have evolved over time. I’m sure Denali existed 15,000 years ago. Whether the local natives were calling it “Denali” then, I don’t know and I’m not sure if there is a way to find out.

That land area, along with our current Southern states, would have brutal summers, even hotter than they already are.

@rickydevorak8364 - the tallest mountain from base to peak is Mauna Kea in Hawaii, although the base is in the Pacific Ocean.
