The country on this list that surprised me was Azerbaijan, as they are a predominantly Muslim country and I never heard of them being particularly atheistic. Two countries that I’m surprised were not on the list were Netherlands and New Zealand.

@scottsimon1 - And Azerbaijan has not been part of the Soviet Union for the past 30 years. Anyway, and in spite of Briggs’ video, I don’t believe that 65% of Azeris are atheist, as 97% of them are Muslim, mainly Shias. My educated guess is that two thirds of Azeris regard religion as of only slight to moderate importance but they are still Muslims and therefore believe in Allah/God.

@wewenang5167 - But so was Armenia, and for that matter, Romania. They were listed in Briggs’ video yesterday on the 10 most religious/least atheistic counties. He should have listed 25, and I think Poland would have been listed too. All are former communist countries.

@ufcprophet40 - And how many Kiwis live in rural areas? (Maybe 20%.) The rest who “don’t care” or “don’t give a s..t” could be atheist or agnostic. (I regard agnostics as a subset of atheists.) It doesn’t mean that 80% of New Zealanders are atheists, but I suspect a number similar to Canada or Australia.

@humboldthammer - I don’t know how that eclipse is particularly epochal, but I definitely plan on viewing it. I hope to view it in Ohio, as the place where I lived for 11 years will be in the path of totality. But I’ll view the eclipse elsewhere if the forecast for the Dayton area calls for overcast or rain. The epochal solar eclipse will be July 16, 2186. I don’t think anyone alive today will need to make plans on that one, but it will be the longest solar eclipse in about 8000 years.

@tonylove4800 - Not sure how your comment is “helpful”. There are about four or five million people in your country, Whether or not you are an atheist affects New Zealand’s percentage by about 0.00002%.

Atheism is not a religion. It’s logical opposite is theism, and that’s not a religion either.

There are 15 countries that used to comprise the USSR, and only three (Estonia, Latvia, and Azerbaijan) were on this list, and they are all small countries.

Ireland and Sweden were neutral in WWII.

@mattbeebe1288 - The Winter War was between Finland and the USSR. Sweden has not fought a foreign war since 1814.

Catholicism is a subset of Christianity.

@Erminestreet - Thank you for your vague comment. If you are going to tell me “I’m wrong”, at least offer an explanation. 👎 I really don’t think an atheist living in Saudi Arabia or in Iran would care to divulge that fact. Regardless, I’m sure there are far more atheists in the USA than in either of those two countries.
