I get concerned when they talk about going after the schools. The schools have so many kids to keep up with and it is an impossible job. The parents had one kid to keep up with. After the the shooter himself, I think the primary blame goes to the parents. Who is going to want to risk working in a school in any capacity if the school takes on that kind of liability?

@ajqueen31 I understand your points. I am an elementary school teacher and there are just so many things we can't do and yet we are responsible for the safety and welfare of these children, never mind their education. I feel like we have all the responsibility and not nearly enough power. If I had my way, there are kids to whom I would say--"Go home. We can't help you. You scare the other kids---Goodbye" But the schools are obligated to try to do more. Now we have more and more disturbed kids in the system and we can't possibly read all their minds. Educators are, for the most part, people who want to help. But-they make one wrong decision and they are, not only likely devastated by the result, but held legally liable. Well intended people's careers are lost, their livelihood and reputation. All because of some ridiculously negligent parents and lunatic kid.

@ajqueen31 Does the school have to have a permission to search a backpack?I think if schools are going to be held responsible for the behavior of every single student, they should have more power. They should be able to send a child home, search anything they want to, expel students, as they see fit, etc

@vade137 I agree about the Department of Education pushing these duties on to teachers, but I disagree that is the reason for the rise of school shootings. I believe that disturbed children who shoot up schools are created in messed up homes with no strong parents who stay married and actually raise their children. I'm a teacher. I wish I could do it all, but I cannot.

@vade137 Can you give us an example of this so called bullying that principals and teachers are doing? I'm a teacher so I would like to know what you think I might be doing wrong.

@WyattRyeSway Okay. You're in high school? How bad is it really? I'm interested. I'm old and went to high school in the 80's and we were fine. I never saw a fight. I knew some kids did drugs, but I never saw them. We all had jobs on weekends and after school. No one was responsible for us except for us and our parents. My dad had a gun and he never even locked it up. It's sat on the kitchen counter with his wallet every evening. He never told us not to mess with it and we never did because--well that would be stupid. My friend you are living in another world. What is it like?

@ajqueen31 I agree that teachers and nurses or overlooked and taken for granted. I am sure those school employees are second guessing themselves and will never recover from what happened on their watch. I think about it often. What would I do? I live in a small town and teach at at small Catholic school, but no one is exempt. From what I saw on that witness stand, those teachers and counsellors have suffered enough.

@WyattRyeSway I am sorry for you if you don’t understand teaching or education or even if you have had a bad experience with a teacher. In my years of experience as a teacher, I find that most of us are doing our best but it is impossible when you get a student with an angry, hostile attitude like yours. I’m guessing you are young and never had any real responsibility, never really tried to contribute to society in a meaningful way. You probably resent anyone trying to make you do something you don’t want to do, something you might find difficult. The easiest thing for you to do is criticize and mock others so you can feel, at least temporarily superior. You blame others for your failures and inadequacies. I can’t imagine any other kind of person who would criticize people, like most teachers, who are trying to help and do something positive with their lives. If I am wrong, I apologize, but that is how come across online. Best of luck to you.
