Well, follow the law and you won't have to worry, will you? Cooperate and return the documents and you could have avoided that completely. All Trump had to do was go through the boxes back in January and pull out his stuff, then hand back the stuff that belongs to the American people. Simple, if you respect our laws. But MARK, you just don't give a rip about the law. You want criminals to be left alone. Not gonna happen.

I also think Trump made a mistake by not explaining why he took those documents in the first place. No one moves 30+ boxes of paper for fun.

I really wish someone would explain the basics to me. I don't understand why Trump wanted these documents in the first place. Then, I don't understand why he gave some but not all back in January. And I don't understand why Trump's attorney would sign a false statement saying everything was returned. Can someone explain these things?

@cherylmockotr I believe it may be released in full if an indictment happens. Hopefully it will help me understand WHY Trump took the documents in the first place. Also, why did he give SOME back in January, but not all? I really wish I knew WHY all this sh!t is happening.

@deanhunt579 Dean, tell me where to find information about Obama taking classified info. All I can find when I search for that is a letter from the archives saying they are still in possession of Obama‘s documents, but they reside in an archive control facility in Chicago. If that’s not true, Tell me what to search for.

@deanhunt579 OK I found it. I’m betting section 2 (a) (I) is going to bite him in the rear. Also, The paragraph that starts with “My decision to declassify…” clearly acknowledges limitations upon the presidents authority to declassify. So now that raises another question for me. The first one I’m still trying to figure out is why would Trump give any of it back. Second this declassification refers to a single binder. Almost 190 top-secret or classified documents have been recovered how could this possibly be about hurricane?

@deanhunt579 there’s a lot there in your post so let me go one thing at a time. You said the president has the authority to declassify any document. My readings of executive orders agree with that, provided the proper procedure is followed. Now as far as taking things, you need to read the presidential records act of 1978. Because even if a president declassified documents, the documents belong to the people. there’s a lot more in your post, I’ll come back shortly.

@deanhunt579 next item. You mentioned that the impeachment failed. The impeachment did not fail, he was impeached. You may be confusing the second possible act, which is removal from office. He was not removed from office. Bill Clinton was impeached for the Monica Lewinsky scandal, but not removed from office. Bill Clinton’s impeachment was still an impeachment. So were both of trumps.

@deanhunt579 The last point I need to address deals with a legal concept. It still looks to me as though whatever Donald Trump took, it was against the law. Whether he declassified them or not, the presidential records act was broken. The thing about using documents that have been taken from the custody of law-enforcement or governmental archives is that they are easily attacked and discredited by a defense attorney. That is, if the presiding judge of a criminal action even lets them be used at trial. The chain of custody is obviously broken, therefore whatever Trump might have intended to do with those documents in the future, he sure as hell would not be able to get anyone convicted. As I said the chain of custody has been compromised.

@deanhunt579 excellent question Dean. You really are a cut above the majority of people I debate with on the Internet. You are looking at the coequal angle, and that’s logical. However, the presidential records act was signed into law by The head of the executive branch. Therefore, coequal was maintained.

@deanhunt579 The obstruction of justice seems like an easy one. The laws require the return of government property. Trump returned some of the government property in January, but not all of it. Months later, Trump -through his lawyer - signed an affidavit swearing under penalty of perjury there was no more property at Mar-a-Lago that belonged to we the people. Thereby preventing The recovery of property stolen from we the people. He clearly obstructed the execution of justice by retaining documents he knew the government wanted.

@deanhunt579 I see two points so if I miss something let me know. The first point is the courts. The courts decide. Second he has not been charged yet. If he is charged, and I think he will be, then they will tell him which bank he robbed. That is how it has worked all along. Conservative news outlets are repeatedly asking that question, because they know it will lead citizens to assume they are entitled to explicit details before charges are brought. That is simply not true, but Fox knows their audience.

@deanhunt579 OK Dean, don’t be rude. No it is not clear in my mind. A president may veto legislation, the president may also sign legislation. When a president signs legislation, it becomes law and continues to be law until revoked by our legislative body, or invalidated through the judicial branch. The presidential records act is still law, and yes all presidents after the enactment date of 01/20/1981 ARE BOUND BY IT. I think you misunderstand the power of the presidency. We call it coequal with the legislative and judicial bodies, but the truth is our legislative body can override the presidents veto and force something into law with a 2/3 majority. Additionally, the Supreme Court can strike down a law as unconstitutional against a president’s wishes. It has been this way for centuries.

@deanhunt579 OK, now we know more. Let me address the convenience of the timing. In January 20 20 they tried to get back the secret, top-secret, and TS/SCI documents. They did not announce their visit in January, nor did they announce their visit in June. They also did not announce their raid in August. Trump himself made this information public in August. It’s really hard to see how we can claim that the FBI was trying to influence midterm elections. If Trump is giving everything back in January, none of us would have known this even happened. Trump gave some but not all of them back. Then in June they went back to Mar-a-Lago. Not only did trumps attorney sign an affidavit swearing there were no more top-secret documents present on the premises, that attorney actively refused to let them search the additional boxes suspected of containing additional classified information. The attorney is very likely to be charged as well. I don’t think there’s much point in debating how much weight cardboard can hold at this point. Trump committed felonies, several of them. all I can say about your opinion that it’s politically motivated is that even if it is, it’s legitimate and justified. Trump handed them felonies on a silver platter by his actions. it has been a good debate, and I genuinely appreciate you arguing facts more than opinions. I am keeping quite busy helping MAGA find details within the inflation reduction act, and sort out what is truth and what is lies from the conservative media. Best wishes!

@sustainablelife1st well crap. That just makes me ask more questions. On number one, if he had evidence of corruption why didn’t he do something with it in the year and a half he had it? Why not go to Fox News studio and blow this administration up? I mean, for all we know Trump might’ve actually had hunters laptop or at least some really damning stuff on that subject. if Trump had the goods on somebody, why didn’t he publish it on TruthSocial? Even if he doesn’t trust the FBI, he could’ve exposed people for whatever dirt he had on them.

@chericramer1808 You are ignorant of the law. Read the Presidential Records Act of 1976: 44 U.S.C. §§ 2201–2209 They do NOT belong to Trump. Saying stupid things will not prevent Trump from facing accountability. What I don't understand is why some people think THEY are going to prison too. If you voted for this criminal, you are not on the hook for his crimes. You are safe.

You might be right about that. I think it would help significantly if Trump would go public and explain why he took them, and why he only returned part of them in January. Might turn down the heat in our country...

@donf3877 I think Hillary‘s actions were inexcusable, and it cost her my vote. I will point out to you that the FBI investigates crime, they do not prosecuted. The decision not to prosecute was made by the department of justice.

Lloyd, if Trump had a good reason for taking those documents it would be really helpful if he would tell the people why.
