Single cell theory makes no sense. They all should have been Things by the first half of the movie. They passed objects and touched each other plenty of times. The Thing can assimilate you only if a chunk of it or a considerate amount of its bodily fluids gets into your system. Otherwise there is no point for it to open up and attack at all.

If it is so, all the crew, including Kate should have been goners and Things by the half of the film. They held objects and passed them among themselves, Colin was carrying Edvard by the other hand.

@quemira1207 LOL if there is a creature in the World which can 1) IN ADVANCE understand which test can blow up its cover, and then preemptively organize an operation to sabotage it right under humans's nose (just try to understand the organizational complexity of logistics such operation required and also the narrow time window in which something like that can be pulled on). 2) Understand that THIS particular dude will be under heavy scrutiny, and purposedly not assimilate him, so humans will waste their time an energy looking for a black cat in a dark room, while there was no cat in the first place; 3) Understand how a helicopter works and how a tractor works, put them apart and then build up the whole UFO out of their pieces... Captain Obvious tells us that this Creature is: 1) Sentient; 2) Smart; 3) Has conscience and not just instincts. My cat was smart and WAITED till we leave to eat the saucage from the table. But it was still dumb because it didn't understand that we can STILL figure out who had eaten the sausage because we have RULES. Because it was not a sentient being, able to think and understand something different than itself.

@TheCandyHole LOL the Thing which develops multi-step strategies, understands that some scientific tests can expose it and sabotages them in advance (using the key it had picked up in a storage room), tears off name-badges from long-johns of people it had assimilated to avoid detection, plants torn clothes with name-badges to frame people, avoids assimilating some people who it knows will be under scrutiny (Clark) to put people on a wrong track (successfully), makes lightningly quick and freaklishly smart decisions like putting itself in a group of people who refuse to open their mouths because their teeth are healthy or have ceramic fillings thus ruining Kate's strategy to detect it through teeth fillings doubling by smartly pitting people against each other to disrupt their organisation, knows how to turn the whole UFO on, and finally builds complex machinery out of other pieces of complex machinery is obviously non-sentient. Scenario clearly tells us that the Thing is not only sentient, but also devilishly smart.
