Ironically, you're painting the wrong narrative. In reality, it is just standard geopolitics in pure pure self interest. And that includes the Pacific Islands. The Pacific Islands aren't 'weak' 'damsels in distress' that needs saving from anyone. In fact, in reality, they have greater power more than ever and deliberately play the bigger powers against one another for that pure pure self interest. I studied South Pacific geopolitics, with a focus on Chinese relations. - SUPER interesting stuff and the history of it. Basically the West fell asleep from the early 2000s to the mid 2010s, thinking it was 'their backyard' and are paying for it now.

5:58 - 7:00 - 'without a great deal of diplomatic clout and so on' - As I stated before, The Pacific Islands aren't 'weak' 'damsels in distress' that needs saving from anyone and painting this picture ignores the history of Pacific Island nation geopolitics. In fact, in reality, they have greatest diplomatic clout now than they ever have had and have always deliberately played the bigger powers against one another for that pure pure self interest. I studied South Pacific geopolitics, with a focus on Chinese relations. Not to mention the Solomon Islands' historic unrests is FAR more complicated than just the people recognising one China over the other.

@okene the elephants will always fight. You might as well use them. We live in reality. No nation fights alone nor have they ever since civilisation. Even other territorial animals make alliances with each other to protect and fight another.

Also the West have broken many a 'international laws and order' over time in the South Pacific, don't kid yourself. And yes, that includes post-colonialism and recently. See the Australian government bugging of the East Timorese government in the early 2000s.

5:10 - this 'dollar diplomacy' recognition game between PR China and Taiwan has played out since the mid 90s in reality. Nothing new. Twas quite funny when Kiribati let PR China build a satellite station, switched their recognition to Taiwan because they got a better deal, and kicked the PR Chinese off the island that hosted the satellite station and thanked the PR Chinese for building it LOL. As said in another comment, I studied South Pacific geopolitics, with a focus on Chinese relations. this 'great power' contention in the South Pacific is nothing new. In the 70s and 80s, it was the West vs the USSR and Japan for political influence.

'Kiribati' is pronounced 'Kiri-bas'.

one lie doesn't counter another lie. See you. See me actually calling the TLDR bias out with facts in another comment (see the 5:58 - 7:00 - 'without a great deal of diplomatic clout and so on' one) unlike the laughable romanticism of China you have. It's f'n geopolitics. It is pure pure self interest from everyone.

@andrewmichieli1760 What do you think the defence pacts are for?

@raycar9827 Compare them in what exactly? the US's dominance really isn't waning in reality. It is just pulled back from sole super dominant superpower in the 90s and early 2000s to just dominant. The US has clear advantages no other country has and it isn't just militarily.
1
@raycar9827 plenty want to, but there isn’t nearly the same dominance. You forget the clear financial dominance of the United States
