I literally did a paper on this in university years ago and it is *super* interesting and can elaborate further than Sam's video here. Ask me anything!! :D What Sam didn't go into is the history of this diplomacy and the conflicts and difficulties of such diplomacy.

@Hsiao-ChunLi mine was more focused towards the geopolitics side and relationship between China, Taiwan and these countries like Wendover states in the video. It's a good general overview, but doesn't go into the history or the geopolitical complications 'on the ground' in these countries of such 'dollar diplomacy'.

Having actually written a paper on this very subject, Tonga us s very interesting case. Essentially well, it's complicated by the fact that its a major logistics hub for illcit drugs from China. The locals tend not to like that.

@Hsiao-ChunLi Alao Sam didn't mention how this dollar diplomacy is favoured over say Australian or New Zealand 'aid' in these countries and the reasons why that is. Also well, the role of the US as well.

@Alex632 In relation to Sam's topic here: Aus + NZ: Here's ya foreign "aid" but only if you be a good boy and do what I say in regards to running your nation, for uh "democratic" purposes and stuff. China / Taiwan: Recognise us as the One True China and here's some money and even some buildings and stuff. Run ya nation how ya want. Pacific nations: mmm...hard choice bro....and big brother Aus + NZ kinda dicked us in the past eh....

@Alex632 the first two rules of geopolitics: 1) NOONE is the "good guy" 2) Everyone is looking after themselves. Yes, that includes Pacific nations. They are NOT pawns to the biggest nations. I argue that in fact they hold the power and play the bigger nations off against one another for that sweet sweet $$$.
