it's both.

@Chris-wq3pe there already is. It's sodium-ion batteries. Lithium has greater energy density for the size and is lighter, thus why it is used for your phone for example. Renewable battery storage doesn't need to consider size and weight as it is stationary. Sodium-ion is also cheaper for the energy density vs lithium.

Fossil fuels get more government subsidies.

1) You forgot a wee thing called rooftop solar, in which the members of the public get the feed-in tariffs 2) In Australia, most solar generation currently is rooftop solar and it has been costed than even with a 90% renewable generation mainly via solar (thus more batteries required), it still is cheaper than any other generation source.

In reality, demand is relatively even throughout the day, as residential demand is replaced by industrial demand during the day and vice versa.
2
There's a thing called grid networks and interconnectors. You can export out the excess, even at a loss e.g. California solar -> Not so sunny Vancouver.

The problem with this is that it isn't near major population centres. The cost of electricity isn't just the generation. It is transmission as well I.e. the lines carrying the electricity.

Oh boy, I love not thinking a thing called rooftop solar exists, where land isn't an issue. Oh boy, I love burning coal and creating coal flyash lakes that can create a ecological disaster if they burst (Kingston, Tennessee). Oh boy, I love not thinking that a lot of solar is on farmland and it actually helps protects and grows the crops more while giving the farmer an additional source of income. Oh boy, you loved being edgy but yet so ignorant.

*depends on geography.

Literally everywhere that has extremely high solar irradiation. Look up a world map of it.

@dEcmircEd yes, the latter has been calculated. It's still cheaper fir places eith massive solar irradiation. Not to mention, solar farms are typically next existing transmission lines and of course rooftop, uses existing.

@hanifarroisimukhlis5989 you forget the transmission costs are the biggest part of your bill. If you build it in the middle of the desert not near population centres, that negates any cost saving. In Australia, rooftop solar is literally less expensive than solar farms. You forget there is no land cost with rooftop solar as well, that isn't borne by the electricity companies.

@dEcmircEd it is in reality the initial upfront cost. It is a few thousand dollars, but that will be paid off within 5 years via solar feed-in. Solar panels tend to last 20. And there is strong uptake. The states of Western Australia and South Australia have the highest solar panel adoption per 100,000 households in the world. And these are states in which mining are a strong part of their economies.

You subsidise fossil fuels more.

Regarding the second sentence: it's both.

Look up world uranium prices. There's your answer.
