  1. A possible reason why Itoigawa has many closed shops - a large fire in 2016 - "At around 10:20 on December 22, 2016 a fire occurred in Itoigawa City, Niigata Prefecture. A strong south wind was blowing from the Pacific high-pressure to the Sea of Japan low-pressure area that day, and the maximum instantaneous wind speed in Itoigawa was recorded to reach 27.2 m/s. The strong wind caused damage to a total of 147 buildings with 120 buildings totally destroyed by fire, 5 buildings half-burnt,and 22 buildings partially burnt. In total, the burnt area of about 4 ha was recorded."
