Why would it not? And lenient punishments may be not optimal, but ultimately it’s part of a system that creates a safer country.

Multiple killed.

No, reforming.
2
That’s one point of view. Another is that ultimately it is not revenge that matters, but making sure it doesn’t happen again. Ultimately the “benefit” of loved ones getting revenge, is far outweighed by a murderer committing another murder since that person was never reformed in prison.

So just because something is bigger it fails to work? Dumbest argument in a lifetime.

@jacobwindsor5511 . No but the US still has double the incarceration rate..

Ultimately society is safer. And it’s not about revenge but reform. In Nordic countries a crime is foremost seen as a failure by society, to prevent that crime. So the works starts to make sure that crime is never committed by that same person again. Less about revenge and more about the improvement of society.

Well it’s certainly not a black people problem and I’ll presume what you meant to write was a mixture of ethnicities.?.
1
Because ultimately reforming these criminals makes other peoples lives better. And it’s not about revenge it’s about reform.

Anyone in that situation is bound to think more with their heart than with their brain...

@lgchess5263 . Life sentence isn't a “Life” sentence in Finland and many other countries. There's the possibility you will sit in prison for the rest of your life, but after 15 years you can apply for parole and the courts will determine if you are a continued danger and if you've been reformed. There's of course an accompanying psych-eval, and other stuff. To make sure. Either you get released under supervison or they deny, and you have to wait 5 years until applying again. Repeat and either you've served until you die (a true life sentence and why it's called a life sentence) or you get released.
