@richardhack9830 A lot of it can be summed up as "fatalism". A belief that things can't improve and that horrible things will happen to you for reasons you can't control. Politics is also considered something that can't be controlled.

@BTinSF The problem is, there's no punishments for knowingly employing illegal immigrants. So they get used as virtual slave labour with no rights, and then get thrown to the wolves when they become inconvenient.

The short answer is: too much legacy code that should have been updated years ago (see also: no term limits, unelected Supreme Court, filibusters, gerrymandering, electoral college, no guaranteed time off work to vote), and Trumplicans who are abusing the system at the behest of their Moscow sugar daddy.
