@frankv.2124 Worth noting that the Siberian reinforcements were originally there to guard against a feared invasion by Japan. A single spy confirmed the Japanese had no intent of attacking, freeing up the troops. Funny how history can turn on such tiny things.

They said that the applause for Stalin's speeches was so long because nobody wanted to be noticed as the first one to stop clapping.

The situation is as escalated as it can get. The posturing and sabre-rattling is designed to produce fear and appeasement. Give them what they need, and who cares what the squalling babies in Moscow threaten?

@TmackSD184 Bear in mind that there's no shortage of Western people who believe ludicrous things, and the disinformation is MUCH less ubiquitous for them than it is for Russians. You'd be surprised how malleable your mind can be if everyone around you is pushing a certain narrative.

@JohnDoe-uw9nq Easy. If nuclear blackmail is seen to work, the doors to Europe are thrown open, since Putin knows that if he threatens nukes, he gets what he wants. Also, a new age of proliferation begins as every tinpot dictator gets the message that nukes let you push around your neighbours with impunity.

When they're hyping of the martyrs of WW2, they don't mention how many of those dead were due to Stalin being utterly unprepared for his buddy Hitler betraying him, and refusing to believe reports of the German attack even after it had started.

It also doesn't apply to any of Russia's 21st century wars.

@tomcarr1358 They do--there's still a severe infestation of left-wing tankies who are pro-Russia on the basis that they just support whichever side the US isn't on. Russia likes to "negotiate" so they appear as the peacemakers in ending the wars they start....but not giving up anything they stole. Just like in Chechnya, they use peace to recover their strength and then move back in a few years later to finish the job.

@tomcarr1358 I have a vague feeling that we're kind of in the same situation as the 1930's. Twenty-odd years out from a war that was sold as a glorious defence of freedom, but which turned into a murky, morally ambiguous quagmire that produced nothing except body bags. And now, everyone's a bit cynical about war and the statement of leaders, reluctant to believe what the media says, nobody wants to kick off a repeat of the old war...and that gives a tyrant room to make their move.

@tylerdurden4006 We'll thank Putin, and react accordingly.

@scipioafricanus5871 "These tanks will be easily destroyed and will make no difference--also, sending them is an unforgivable escalation."
