@arturobianco848 That's what I said; capitalist. Russia is the final form of capitalism; the super-rich are in bed with the government and have free reign to impoverish the country however they like, just so long as they fall in line with the leader. Given their behaviour when they're semi-bound by rules, do you really think American billionaires wouldn't be doing this stuff if the law wasn't restraining them?

@seanbinkley7363 Ironically, it's because of a democratic and free society that the wrongs of the past get talked about at all. Dictatorships can whitewash, glorify and / or cover up their own historical atrocities and present themselves as being better.

@arturobianco848 I twitch whenever I hear anyone talk about Russia as being "communist". It's probably the most capitalist country on the planet, and an object lesson about where giving power to oligarchs and not caring about politics will bring you to.

If you look back to WW2, you can see the EXACT same arguments being made against aiding England prior to Pearl Harbour--"We need the money here." "The Germans never did anything to us." "They're both as bad as each other.". The UK exists because those people were overruled and ignored.

@donaldcarey114 Russia is already deep in the grip of the Nazis, or something so close that the difference is purely academic. Until they demilitarise, undergo regime change and show signs of having decisively shaken off the dreams of empire, it would be foolish to give them any slack. At best, armed neutrality, a cage of NATO states and a demilitarised zone.

@Snugggg A big difference there was that the German people were very receptive to the Allies. Before the invasion, there were contingency plans for managing an implacably hostile population that would be mounting constant guerrilla attacks on the occupying troops, but that largely failed to materialise. Japan was also relatively receptive, largely due to the shock of the A-Bombs (without them, combined casualties for a land invasion were estimated at 4-16 million). Russia...has not yet entered the hangover phase of imperialism.

@CountScarlioni British people also know what it's like to live in a country under constant attack and threat from a fascist dictatorship.
