  1. It's not unfamiliar. The British Empire was much the same, touting itself as the pinnacle of human culture while doing abominable things to the people of India, Ireland, Canada, Australia and...well, just about every other place we set up shop. The difference is, that was in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Even when there's misplaced nostalgia for the Empire and the days when Britain was a big deal, there's no serious talk about restoring it through force, starting with invading Ireland.

  2.  @eddgar-ce3md  The thing about venerating sacrifice is that it can easily become the fetishising of sacrifice, taking their huge casualties as a perverse badge of honour while never asking if it's necessary.
