I think it's also relevant, because the Russian attempts to dehumanise the Ukranians are front and centre of their war effort. The accusations of Nazism, the consistent "accuse the enemy of whatever we're doing" strategy, the denial that Ukraine has a culture of its own, the looting of museums to destroy Ukranian history....pushing back against that is important in its own right, even if it's not part of the struggle for survival.

I think there are two factors. One is the assassinations that Russians have conducted in Britain, one of which killed an innocent person through the careless use of poison and resulted in a whole town being evacuated. And the other is that the defining event of our recent history is standing alone against a fascist invader, and withstanding endless bombing attacks aimed at civilians.

@SansNeural There was a quote I saw about environmentalism that stuck with me--"We don't need a hundred people doing a perfect job, we need a million people doing a decent job."

@dixonpinfold2582 That dictators have no friends at all when they start losing.

@VilkatisJanis I think / hope that in the future, we'll have an international system for monitoring the health of a democracy, with clear rules for taking action to isolate and reform those who show signs of slipping into strongman worship and nationalism. We could all see the rot setting in in Russia, we could all see what Putin was doing, but the leaders plugged their ears because they didn't want to lose votes by eschewing cheap oil.
