Mr Laughland, you cannot pretend that Brexit was not a protest vote against the British political class. In any case, by your own admission, people who voted to leave the EU did so for very different reasons. For instance, the majority of Commonwealth voters from India and Pakistan - i.e. foreign citizens - voted to leave the EU knowing it would facilitate the immigration of people from their own communities. Some misinformed indigenous British voters backed Brexit as they were conned into thinking it would reduce immigration drastically whereas all it did was to liberalise immigration from the whole world into the UK. And some others backed Brexit to spite the political class.
There was no clear long-term post-Brexit plan prior to the referendum. It was a collection of very simple, even contradictory, slogans for the masses - ' Taking back control ('sovrinity innit') vs 'Global Britain'. Oh, so which one is it? The truth is that the British political class on both sides of the Brexit argument truly despises the British public. The plan was always that of 'Global Britain': giving the country away to foreign hostile interests for a quick buck. Charlatans like Farage and Rees Mogg had covert personal financial interests in backing Brexit. The sort of people who preach disaster capitalism. How can one pretend to act in the interest of national sovereignty while letting China penetrate UK domestic markets so easily. Why is the UK government giving money away to the French to 'stop the boats' but without changing its domestic policies to stop making the UK such an attractive destination for these illegal chancers?
Mr Laughland, if you really are one of the intellectual masterminds behind Brexit, you should feel ashamed of what you've done to Britain. I'd like to think you didn't think things through... because if you did, it means you've always held Britain in utter contempt.
