@rmp5640 Even though they are, I was in Japan and I am a man. Also visited Thailand and the Philippines and Mexico and Canada and China.

That's so very nice! I did that when I was in Japan, the students loved to practice their English on Americans.(I can't speak Japanese). In Thailand, I could understand what they were saying but could not speak Thai. They said things about me that were not bad, but did say some not appropriate things about the Thai women we were with which we ignored so as to not pick a fight with them. It was fun playing Thai chess on the street in Bangkok 16 Thai against 1 American. They couldn't beat me and I couldn't beat them..

When I was in Tokyo, the people on the street were open and friendly and more than willing to talk to me in English. I would ask a question like what do you think about the US using the Atomic bomb on Japan, and they would say, "It was war".

@sdays59 You are quite wrong about that, I am impressed and compliment my friends all the time when they practice their English and do well. I'll bet you could not even understand some of the accents I listen to.

@nood1le We should be teaching and learning "standard". Which is a form of English for everyone. All the Africans I know try to learn American and sometimes their accent gets in the way.

@UltimateCowBoyCat This is generally true because we are the most provincial. Many other countries learn more than one language.
