Also watch out for bond initiatives. They aren't retroactive but I just became a US voter and the citizens in my area recently voted to add a big "one time" government surcharge to themselves (because it had a nice "Save all the Kittens Now!" type title and because they are stupid). This is In an area where the government serves nobody well. Its just a theft so that politicians can pay their friends to pretend to build something (infrastructure! its for the children!) and they don't even hide it. I had silly ideas about how Americans were and how they thought before I moved here! I thought they were smarter than this! If they can surcharge me once, they will absolutely do it over and over, with the support of 50.00001% of the voters. Frustrating.
