@taylors445 Not only that, we don't even know if she is actually closed off, brainwashed or in denial, she did not appear on this documentary. We just see her brother, who describes her as a happy, amiable and empathetic person. He is literally getting on a train to visit her (and the other siblings) at the end. So to me it does not sound like she is denying anything or avoiding her Polish relatives at all. Anyone who emerges from their life story with a happy outlook is ahead of the game.

So many adopted children disagree with you, and know that their adoptive mothers are their mothers. Yes, I get that the circumstances are different for this man but it does not render his adoptive mother evil. We don't know anything about her (other than she adopted a skinny child to fatten him up, which is a bit nicer than just saying "bring me the best, healthiest one"). Blood and fatherland are not the only things that connect people.

@chud-of4yb Take a breath, look in a mirror, and think. Or maybe just try the thinking part. It was not in her power to wind back history and stop the war. Adopting a child is not evil

Janina/Anita and Jozef are interesting. Both have a similar history, but have reacted very differently. I am glad that although they disagree they remain family and are in regular communication. I cannot say that I would have wished to live in Poland between 1945 and 1990 either, so I have empathy for Anita and her preferences in this. It is OK for her to like Germany and have assimilated, she is not required to feel any more victimized than she would like to feel. Like her I have a brother who enjoys coming over during holidays to argue about politics, we all love him but sometimes it is enough!
