@bilic8094 NATO went into Kosovo to enforce UN resolution. Mind explaining what resolution Russia is enforcing?
16
@johnbest4513 looking at Russian Empire, I think they give UK a run for its money. USA isn't really expansionist. Their territory hasn't changed for a while.
7
@michellebrown4903 1898 is when US annexed it. So it has been a while. Since then Russia has annexed a lot of territories and countries. Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland etc. all the way to Ukraine right now.
6
@logikus8638 Donbas only had 40% russian speakers in there. 60% are Ukrainians. Russia litteraly sent its military there and to Crimea. The well known russian little green men. I haven't falsified anything. I used things written in Wikipedia on account of 1244. Russian language isn't banned in Ukraine. They just stopped using it as official second language. Might want to check your own information as well cause that is clearly false. Another thing to note. Kosovo and Crimea are indeed in similar situation as they both were given to another country against their wishes. But Donbass? Majority there are Ukrainians. Ukrainians currently rounded up by Russian and separatists forces and forcefully conscripted to genocide local Ukrainian population to later replace with Russian. Russia is well known for its entnic cleansing.
6
@logikus8638 yeah, my bad. I did read on wiki where original thing came from. And no. NATO didn't organise Kosovan independence conflict. Russia on the other hand is well known to be behind separatists rise as it paid and supplied both men and equipment in area for 8years.
4
@logikus8638 the area isn't overwhelmingly pro Russian. And again we know that Russian soldiers who were "discharged" were fighting in Donbas. Speaking of shelling and evacuation. That last one which Ukraine was accused off and which they denied came into rather interesting time. Just like the Soviet village that was supposedly shelled by Finish but it turned out to be a Russian plot. Also, coincidentally, separatist videos were datamained and found to been made long before shelling happened. Again, Russian isn't banned. Ukraine government removed it from being one of official languages. People can speak it just fine. Genocide isn't low level propaganda. This isn't the first time Russia displaces or kills the locals. Crimean Tatars come to mind. Holodomor can be remembered as well.
4
Lithuania refused twice. Primarily because they really don't want to bolster their population by 25% and of Russian descent.
3
@logikus8638 11. Decides that the main responsibilities of the international civil presence will include: (e) Facilitating a political process designed to determine Kosovo's future status, taking into account the Rambouillet accords (S/1999/648); I think this is the part. Serbia also asked international court of justice advisory opinion at a later date and court stated that it was allowed to do it with international and within un1244 rules.
3
Lithuania is just doing it's job. Preventing sanctioned goods from crossing its territory. So long as Russia continues its aggressive policies, tensions will keep rising.
2
No, that would be Russia, which with invasion of Ukraine caused world wide misfortune for all people all over world, including russian population.
2
Respect? For what? We respected their military until invasion of Ukraine. Now everyone thinks it's a joke and perhaps rightfully so.
2
@josefowitzer Lithuania actually since independence until it joined NATO tried to be as polite with Russia as possible. Nation is the only one of the three Baltics that has given russians citizenships no questions asked as long as they were in the country at the time. On top of that russian speakers in Lithuania untill around 2008 were in fact having preferential treatment as Russian was pretty much an unofficial second language. I should know, i come from mixed family. XD. It really shouldn't suprise anyone as to why Lithuania chose NATO over Russia. every sane person would make the same choice. As for it's hawkishness towards Russia? We long since made peace with the fact that we will be the battleground in upcoming war with Russia. We knew this war would happen regardless and made the best choice for most trustworthy ally. Lithuanian hostility right now also shouldn't be a surprise. It along with it's Eastern bretheren knows Russia and what it can do. Containing Russia is the best strategy to delay WW3. Just like with Hitler with UK and France, Putin will challenge NATO when he feels his country is strong enough. Ensuring this is ether delayed or Putin meases up by acting to quickly like in Ukraine benefits Lithuania in the long term. And as part of EU and NATO Lithuania can allow it self to box above it's weight. Especially when all Lithuania is doing is enforcing EU sanctions.
2
@Anonymous Bosch Putin is fascist as he fits most if not all fascist signs. Whether he can annex Ukraine isn't something we know yet. Russia isn't as strong as we thought it was. Plenty of soldiers in Ukrainian army without fascist tattoos. I know people like you like to point at Azov battalion, but Azovs are not the whole army.
2
@josefowitzer two things. You've been in war but have you ever been in a great war? What ever war you've claim to have been in, is nothing like WW 1-2. And that is where we are heading regardless. 2. I didn't wish you to avoid war. I wished you and your country to avoid being given to the enemy to temporarily avoid war.
2
@Anonymous Bosch I'm sure some have some of them have some of the characteristics, not as much as Putin though. Trump probably comes close but still not close enough. Not sure why you think them being strong, makes them greater fascist threat. The fact that western countries don't throw people in prison for opposing government and don't kill their opposition like Putin does already removes them from fascist list.
2
Not really. What would they do when stopped in Lithuania? Shoot? That would be an act of war perpetrated by Russia.
1
@blackwidowsm Winer soldier has proven to be worth nothing when fighting outside of Russian territory. General Winter helped Russians defend, not to attack. We are about four months in and Russia still hasn't taken Ukraine. Why do you think a better armed and equipped west wouldn't be able to take the russian bear? Germans who were opposed by half the Europe and US last time were able to go deep into Russian territory twice. Once even successful. Not to mention it took over 20million lives for Soviets in WW2. This time, Germans with help of 90% of Europe could repeat their ww1 success.
1
The question is, would it count as soft invasion? Lithuania isn't preventing goods from entering through sea at all.
1
Isn't that what Lithuania done? People and food can still pass.
1
@Spinachisgreen2194 and those are the goods Lithuania is enforcing. People and food can still pass.
1
Except US has yet to attempt a regime change in Europe. Russia did it multiple times through 20ith and perhaps even 21st century. Europe doesn't need to support American war effort, as shown in Iraq where only a couple members joined.
1
@logikus8638 1244 actually claims it's up to collective will of Kosovo people to be guiding principle behind Kosovo status.
1
@GeorgeFafa Russia isn't protecting its citizens because people living in Ukraine are Ukrainians, shocker I know. And protecting its borders? Are you joking? Ukraine wasn't the one to invade Russia. You accuse me of having dumbest comment of the century, yet yours beat mine by a mile.
1
@bilic8094 You mean referendum organised by Russia with its military present and no independent observers? Riiiiight. Just like communists in 20ies came to power in Baltics and people asked them to join Soviet Union./s
1
@stanislavmauzy8384 Whose land it was prior to Germanies creation?
1
@Spinachisgreen2194 you sound like a pro Russian troll. This might surprise you but not all Russians in Kaliningrad support Putin or his war. Especially when they are the ones thrown under the bus. Aunt in Russia predicted traitorous Putin starting another war the will weaken Russia and lo and behold it happened.
1
Why not just rescind recognition of Russian existance? Or it's stolen territories? I think we could unofficially befriend China by recognising Syberian territories taken from them as theirs. Oh, officially they won't say a thing, but unofficially they will be happy. Russia and China nether trust nor like one another. Their alliance is one of convince in opposition to US.
1
@bilic8094 lol, rubl is weak. Russia keeps it higher by forbidding foreigners from selling bonds and prohibiting Russian citizen from taking out their foreign currencies. Companies in Russia are forced to buy rubl and Russian banks keeps spending it's foreign currency to temporarily prop up rubl. It's all artificial and without it, rubl would go back into free fall as before these measures were introduced. As for wining on the battlefield? Russia started with total invasion of Ukraine but had to change to just invading Donbass and Lugansk, which they very very slowly been able to take. Germans in WW2 took swatches of Soviet land but still lost. Winter will be interesting but if Europe has enough recourses in reserves, it's not gonna look good for Russia. Especially since EU nations are looking to replace Russia as has and oil exporter as Russia can't be trusted.
1
@legokingtm9462 Austria isn't theirs. They had to conquer it last time. Actually, Austria predates Germany.
1
Pretty sure Germany signed a treaty with the allies that it's current borders are its only borders and they have no claim to any other territory, nor will they attempt to expand.
1
@richardmoloney689 Ireland doesn't have a dispute with UK over territory. Just over border and GFA.
1
Yeah, food and most people can travel without problem.
1
@josefowitzer there is no deeply rooted long standing hostility towards Russia. There was always lack of trust due to historic reasons but Lithuania hasn't been hostile towards Russia until 2014 when Russia first invaded Ukraine and anexed Crimea. Baltic States are under no illusion that they are anything but a battlefield for both sides regardless of whom they would have joined. At least with NATO they are guaranteed that their allies won't attempt to absorb them.
1
@josefowitzer Appeasement hasn't worked with Hitler, why would it work with Putin? History is repeating it self Mr. Chamberlain. You would be wise not to wave you toilet paper in the air again.
1
@Anonymous Bosch The last time Lithuania took the interest of superpower near its border, it got annexed as a thank you. Why should Lithuania repeat the same mistake again? Especially when fascist Putin is in charge of Russia and even admits he wants to reconquer nations Russia once conquered.
1
@Josefowitz You alternative is enslavement and perhaps displacement to Syberia. Yes, Chamberlain wanted to avoid war and was willing to practice pragmatism of gifting Hitler other countries and letting him do as he pleases. And where has that led him? To Hitler becoming strong and bold enough to wage war. It's not moralism that simply guides me. It's pragmatism where history has shown that appeasement doesn't work. We are far better off weakening Russia or forcing it to speed up its plans and attack before it is ready. Peace is a luxury you can't afford unless you wiling to kiss a Russian boot that stomps on you slave.
1
@josefowitzer Which was being done until the ill fated time of 2014 when Russia chose to annex Crimea. West even looked sideways as Russia organised and armed separatists in Ukraine, but in the end Russia was the one who chose to stop playing the game of diplomacy and return to aggressive conquering. Appeasement never brought benefits of peace, it just delayed conflict every time. And even that was often at someone else's cost. Nations throughout out history kept peace not by appeasing another power but by ensuring others don't become to powerful and smacking down when they can. Nations played of one another every time they could. War is inevitable. And if you want peace, you better prepare for war. War with Russia is coming regardless. As I mentioned earlier, we can fight ether weaker Russia or stronger Russia.
1
@josefowitzer oh, I am sure they would. I am not as ignorant as to think everyone shares my opinion. After all, no one listened to Churchil when he spoke about Hitler being a threat, and I'm not even half a man he was. It's also always easy to giveaway someone else's land then yours. But again. What do you do when he comes asking for more? What do you do, when he wants your territory, since you gave away everyone else's and now it's your turn. We both work on pragmatism, but the problem is, yours leads to the single dead end when you ether have to fight a powerful enemy alone, whom you helped make stronger where's mine is a conflict against weakened opponent you fight with help of others. War is inevitable. You can delay it, but you can't prevent it.
1
@josefowitzer war is always inevitable. Our history is perfect example of that. It can be delayed yes, but countries always come to blows eventually. Especially the more powerful ones. I'm not fatalist. Simply for me it's better to be prepared and not need it then need it and not have it. And I wish you both good luck and for your country to not experience what it is like being sold out to another in vain hope of preventing inevitable war.
1
@Anonymous Bosch Navalny is the most recent to be thrown into prison plus attempt to assassinate. There have been many members of opposition and journalists who ether died or were jailed over years. Being imperialist alone doesn't make one fascist. USA didn't throw people in prison for opposing Iraq war. Russia has passed a law where critiquing Russian invasion or even calling it invasion can end up with up to 15 years in prison. Being greater threat alone, doesn't make one evil. Fascist Russia on the other hand has already proven to be a threat to its neighbours. Putin checks a lot, if not all fascist points in the fascism handbook. His orcish army shoots civies in the back and rapes women. He forcefully conscripts Ukrainians in Donbas into army to be used as canon fodder so he could replace them later with Russians to create russian population in area. He out right admired this is war to gain territory and he wants more.
