Alex: I would not take the photographs too seriously, soldiers are notorious the world over for their stupid antics, and in particular in times of war their coping with death and destruction is often, what is called sick humour, for example a soldier gets his leg blown off, his comrades might give him the nickname skippy/ peg leg/ thumper. it is not because they are callous, but because they know today/ tomorrow it could be them.

  2. the location they chose for their photo opportunity, that was poorly thought through, not the smartest choice but as I said prior to this comment, soldiers and civilians are inclined to be stupid, go to any holiday resort at night and you will see what I mean, or down your local bar.
