  1. Internet worked because it was open. That's the basis for everything that has been achieved so far. It was open because it was powered by ads. Internet is getting worse now because instead of being open, everyone is being shoved into platforms behind a paywall and a login screen, which is exactly that "alternative business model". So now you can't even find anything on google anymore unless you add "reddit" at the end of the search query, which is really sad, given the path that reddit itself has taken. Early internet was also supported by ads. The difference was that each resource had it's own ad placements that were embedded into the content. Ad networks were not a thing. And websites that went overboard with embedded ads were simply abandoned, so it was a self-regulating system. Then ad networks came and they are the ones that upset this balance. When a single system can track you across your whole internet activity, of course it's not going to end well. For YT in particular it might be better for it to adopt some kind of subscription model (not as expensive as YT premium, but something like that). It would dramatically slash the userbase, reducing size of the platform and the associated expenses, while making each user more valuable so the company would be kept in check and not pull any of the BS that they've done so far. In an ideal world monopolies like YT should either not exist or be cooperatives, and not for-profit corporations, but in our world, the premium-only model might be the best choice. If anything this will free a bunch of people to do something more useful. However this is not a universal solution applicable to the whole internet and it would destroy the internet if everyone continued to do this.
