My emergency room story for those wondering. I was wearing work gloves as I was changing the transaxle fluid in my daughters 2012 Sienna. The drain plug was very tight so I bared down on it and it let loose...driving my left hand down into the concrete floor. It hurt but I just shook it off and finished the job (and the rear differential fluid change). When I removed the glove, I noticed my ring finger was getting swollen so I tried removing the wedding ring....nope, not even close. Kept it in ice water most of the night, hoping it would get better but woke up the next day and the finger was a scary reddish-blue color. Went to ER and they said they had to cut it off. "My finger or the ring?" Thankfully, the ring and they have pretty cool tool for that. (Looks like a Drummel) I still need to bring the ring to my jeweler to get it re-welded together.

My neighbors see me working on cars a lot. One of them, a widow, had bought a new Jeep but after only 3 or 4 years, had problems with it and was quoted $4,000 by Jeep to fix it. She came over asking me for car advise. I said, if it were me, I'd get rid of the Jeep and buy a Lexus. The next week, she's driving a very nice Lexus SUV and loves it...great vehicle!!

Congrats on the soon 2-year YouTube anniversary and going over 25 Million views!! You’ve kept me busy these past few years catching up with our vehicle maintenance but it’s nice to drive around knowing things are no longer neglected!!

@gorgeusjames Being a Christian has nothing to do with politics.

I wondered why we’ve never had this problem but then learned me changing the charcoal cabin filter yearly and leaving it on auto 72 is probably why!! Thanks for another educational video!!
80
Has to be among the top 3 videos you’ve made, brother!! I can’t count how many used Rav-4’s and Camry’s I’ve seen with 250,000 miles!! Can we get this same info on Lexus and Scions??
77
As a backyard mechanic, I'd love a video where you suggest what aftermarket items are okay to use and what items we should keep OEM. (Like alternators, ECMs, suspension, etc.) I agree with only using the OEM oil/air filters, too!!
76
With Toyota new and used prices these days, fixing an older one is usually the way to go. I’m always looking in the background of your videos to see what’s in the shop so happy to see some info on them and hoping that awesome 88 Supra can be born again!!!!
75
Our 2008 Corolla is still going strong with 150K miles. Seats are comfy and, as a DIY maintenance guy, I love that transmission dip stick. She did have leaky power steering fluid but a few small clamps on the hoses fixed it.
73
As one of your first subscribers, can’t express how much of a blessing you’ve been!! My DIY skills have improved from just doing oil changes on drive-up ramps to doing ANY fluid change and brakes !! You’ve saved me thousands as I am the family “mechanic” taking care of seven vehicles. May the Lord bless you all and shine His face upon you and bless you for a thousand generations!!
67
Another great video!! I have an Excel spreadsheet to keep track of our families 7-vehicles (mostly Toyota’s so I’m usually just doing maintenance). A good inspection often is also very important!!
35
Always neat to see that growing Tesla graveyard! The Car Wizard showed a screenshot of a replacement Tesla battery for sale, $19,000 and IT WAS A USED BATTERY!!!
32
Yep there’s many good reasons to learn to DIY car maintenance. Our local Toyota dealership service department has been great but I, still, check their work. (Trust but verify!!)
31
I had a good experience, many years ago, from our local mechanics at Christian Brothers Automotive. My wife's Corolla had a loud screeching noise from one of the front wheels. I brought it over and they looked at it and said, "She just had a small pebble stuck in the caliber so we removed it and it's fine, pads look good, no charge" I was speechless and have gone there ever since with anything I can't handle.
29
For first time folks, before you even begin, take clear pictures of everything before you start....so handy when you put it back together and there a hose or something dangling!!!! "Where does this go?"
28
Yep I did researched on a VERY much advertised company, "Car Shield" and tons of horror stories on-line and the Better Business Bureau has given them an "F" rating....ouch. When I had my truck in the shop, they asked me if I had an extended warranty and I replied, "I AM the extended warranty...I do all my own maintenance and any repairs I can handle!"
27
Anybody else notice the audio/video quality has gotten a lot better in these videos? Kudos to the production/backstage team!!! ;-)
26
Yep, great advice, as usual! I also make sure to engage my 4-high and 4-Low in my 4x4 Tundra at least once a month, especially during the summer (for 10-minutes either on a straight road or on a dirt/gravel road). What’s that old expression, “Use it or lose it!” 😎
25
I've been waiting for this one....great job! I agree, don't waste too much money on the professional grade stuff when other stuff will get the job done that we don't do every day! As a DIYer, I've found putting certain tools/items in those big orange Home Depot tool boxes (and are labeled) helps...I have "oil change" and "brake job" and "tire tools" and "electrical tools"...really makes the jobs go faster. And the 10mm socket stays on my little cheapo cordless power wrench...Toyota loves their 10mm bolts!
25
I will have to pray hard for my starter in my V-8 Tundra!!! My friend was a mechanic on the old B-52 bomber and said there’s a hydraulic pump that’s a nightmare to replace. He said, “It’s like they built the plane around that pump!!”
24
I love it and agree on spotting shoddy work by mechanics....so many don't take pride in their work, anymore. My Dad taught his boys, "If your going to do something, do it right!" I notice SO many older Camry's and T-100's still out there doing what they do best....RUN!! :-)
23
Our 2008 Corolla is still in the family and when I just did the transmission fluid change (it’s 2nd) it was surprisingly cleaner than I expected!! Great little car!!
22
We've always liked how they look...especially the new Generation! It's, also, very easy to completely remove the center console for cleaning...makes it look brand-new!! My dislikes: 1) Unable to replace headlights...you have to replace entire LED assembly ($500-800) so hoping those LED's have a long-lifespan. 2) The tires that came with it when new (NanoEnergy). In our 2017, she only had just under 24,000 miles and the treads were very low and we had a flat. Thankful for the doughnut spare in the 2017 and since the 2021 AWD didn't come with one, I bought one for it. (And a better jack.) 3) That ridiculous fastener/clip that covers the HV Filter. It looks like it unscrews but that's a lie...I end up destroying the stupid things and have to search through my two boxes of various clips to replace it. 4) The UFO speaker in the front! The 2017 doesn't have it but our 2021 does....she is wrapped up in a few layers of pipe insulation to muffle her. The new Rav4 hybrids I hear seem to be even louder!!!
21
I agree 100! I remember in the 70’s when many backyards were used to change the oil and do maintenance. Today, we are a “throw away” society…from appliances (which used to last 30 years) to vehicles. I just checked the oil in my Toyota who had an oil change 5,000 miles ago and it’s only a slightly darker golden yellow but she’s getting changed on my next day off!!
20
Love the Cressida! I met my wife in High School in the late 70’s and her Dad had a 78 blue Cressida with the powerful in-line 6! Comparing it to my 2-year old 77 Ford Mustang (a rebadged POC Pinto) was almost laughable! That Toyota was passed down two times and had over 300,000 miles before the rust in Maine ended her.
20
Such a great blessing to us Car Care Nuts!!!
20
So nice to watch the Toyota master at work! This is the reason I, still, haven’t replaced my old-school headlights in my 2014 Tundra, fear of causing electrical gremlins!!!
20
Good tip on using a zip-tie for that spare tire chain. Another tip to help hear car noises is to drive behind a big, brick building which helps reflect noises back. (I drive behind our local Kohl’s building.)
19
Yes something so small!! I cleaned it and the throttle body in my daughter’s old 2012 Sienna and she asked if I replaced the engine, the improvements were that noticeable!!
17
I have noticed the waiting area in our local Toyota dealership (Colorado Springs) has a lot more folks than usual....people taking care of their cars, a good thing! I haven't, yet, noticed my dealership marking up prices over MSRP but will be the first to lodge a complaint if they do. My heart goes out to the car salesmen, too...one came up to me and asked if I was interested in looking at cars and I told him I was just here for Toyota parts and he asked if I had any used cars to sell to him...very sad.
17
When I first saw the Cross, my first thought was, "Looks just like a Mazda CX-5!" But shame on Toyota for only offering a puny 2.0L engine. My daughter's CX-5 has the 2.5L SkyActive engine but Mazda also has one with a turbo!!
17
These guy is a Toyota-owners best friend!! He knows our vehicles inside-and-out and teaches us SO much about problem areas and things to keep an eye on. I look forward to the video of this engine swap!!!
16
Yep I’m hoping my engines look that clean on the inside with my 6-month, 5,000 mile changes! Last week, my 21 Prius got her 4th change at 16,000 miles and the oil was a golden, dark brown which is a good sign of a clean engine inside!!
16
Holy Moly, I need a nap after watching all that! Huge hat tip to the master mechanic!! (Putting it all back together looks like the most difficult part!) You are what the Good Book says, "More than a conqueror!"
16
My wife especially loves you because you post on Saturday mornings so I’ll put you on in the kitchen and load the dishwasher and clean while watching!! The Lord bless you, too!!
16
The 2023 Prius is supposed to close to 70 mpg!!
16
Whenever AMD goes deep into an explanation, I turn into Forest Gump, “I am not a smart man!!” 😎
15
Legen….wait for it…dary!! AMD is a superhuman!!!
15
Ain’t no way I could’ve put that back together!! You are amazing!!
14
Wow, I didn't know the auto mechanic field was so complicated but glad you explained how hard work, perseverance, and dedication can make it a very rewarding, 6-figure salary and career! I'm just a lowly DIY guy but do get excited when one of our vehicles is due for work, especially with something I've not done very much (like transmission service, differentials, etc.) I'll think about all the right size tools and plan-ahead to make it go as smoothly as possible but even the "nightmares" and surprises doesn't bother me too much. (The 2017 Prius is due for her 6--month oil change right after Christmas and already have everything ready! This is the last one before I swap out the canister oil filter housing for a spin-on....already have those parts, too!!) Merry Christmas to you and the family!!! Jesus is the reason for the season!
14
This is the exact reason, years ago, I started learning how to do my own maintenance on our vehicles. It started with the oil and cabin filters then oil changes and, now, I can do almost everything. The money I saved doing things myself went into buying tools and, now, I have a wonderful Quick Jack 7000 that easily lifts my Tundra and my daughter's Sienna and other daughter's Palisade! My local Toyota dealer used to match on-line prices (Sparks Toyota) but doesn't anymore but does, still, give me a 10% military discount which pays for taxes.
14
Yep, dry rot is a big problem in RV tires because they will do that way sooner than treads wearing out. To help protect from the UV sun, many of us cover the tires while they are parked which does help make them a last a few years longer. Good catch on required maintenance items....I also have little flashlights and inspect our vehicles, "What would Ahmed look for???" :-)
13
Yep, it's a heartbreaker! I hope this van can recover and be okay. A few weeks ago, I was in a line at a stoplight and noticed a car in front of me was blowing thick, white smoke...oh no! As we pulled away, I noticed it was a beautiful white early 2000's Toyota Avalon....oh no!!
13
Wow, my el cheapo $28 Etekeity Infrared thermometer Worked! (2014 Tundra 5.7L Max Crew 4X4) Started off at 60 degrees cold, started engine and ran through gears, she hit 85 in about 5 minutes, went up and went through gears again, and the top/right of the drain pan (where AMD showed) was at 106 in 9 minutes. So I don't need a $300+ OBD2 reader to get tran temp! (Be careful under the vehicles, I was seeing 350 degrees on parts of the tailpipe...ouch) God Bless!!
12
Yikes! Two sure ways to kill a Yotas are 1) accident and 2) rust. When I lived in Maine, rust usually killed cars within 7-9 years. I’d get rid of this thing asap.
12
Wow she’s a beauty!! I also love seeing folks taking care of their vehicles and passing them along to family members, as ours have done since the 1980’s!! This makes me want to go clean my Tundra engine bay….she gets lots of dust from driving on dirt roads when we go RV camping!
12
My Dad taught me about the Italian tuneup in the 70’s. We’d take the Chevy Malibu wagon out on the interstate and floor it for a few miles! (With the V-8, you can see the gas gauge going down!)
11
You make difficult things look easier...I do learn a lot of tips with every video! Sometimes I wish I had an older car to practice on by restoring it....maybe someday!! :-)
11
Just did my first oil change on the 21 Prius AWD at 1,515 miles. Super easy, 3 10m cover bolts, 14mm drain, and an old-school spin off/on filter!! That OW-16 oil is very thin, for sure.
11
Thanks for the tips…I’ve had that cool filler for years but putting a little hose on the drain tube is a new tip!! When I just did my Tundra, I was afraid to mess with the block drains so just did the radiator and will do it, again, before fall. (A gallon and a half came out and it looked very clean.)
