On the point of the justification of civilian casualties the Japanese were already willing to go to the table, but they wanted a conditional surrender and the Americans an unconditional, when they surrendered all their conditions got met, but it was called an unconditional surrender because the Americans did that on their own intuitive because the understood that the reason the Japanese wanted those was than the Japanese people themselves could only be made to go alone with those basic commitments in place. Also the Americans firebombed their wood and paper cities, which killed more than the atom bombs, it also destroyed the traditional Japanese economy, which was cottage industry based, and culturally and artistically very refined. It's like if someone decided to set the Mongols on renaissance Italy, literally in some ways as the conduct of American and Australian occupation troops in Japan for years after the war was on a level comparative to the Soviets, or indeed even the Japanese themselves in China.
