The enlightenment was tied into romantic notions about Roman republicanism, just as Venna and Moscow were new romes in a religious sense and it would be argued by continuity, the English, American and French liberals all sort to build an ideal of pre-imperial Roman political and cultural enlightenment within their own states. Architecture would come to have fairly direct insinuations of political sympathies, neo-classical suggested whiggism while more localised and established forms had their own meanings, such symbolism would still be an actively contested matter by the Russian emigres only a century ago (one church design or another implied different political loyalties among a group who were only united by exile and would happily have fought each other in different circumstances).
